first look.....3 years later

We were blessed with another week at the beach not too long ago.  I had some fun photographing a few familiar scenes. This time with older, taller, and wiser children.  Enjoy!

Remember this post? Mika was 4. Iris was a feisty 2 yrs old, and still asleep when I took the original pictures.  A lot has changed since those photos were taken (...the understatement of the year award goes to.....), including the shoreline, which took a beating from winter storms last year.  Some large boulders and new stairs gave the kids quick access to their "favourite place in the world".

(using the doorknob for reference in the two photos gave me some real perspective on just how BIG he is now!)

(and not to be outdone in ANY way these days, little sister joined in all the early morning action ;)

a story...

I've been asked to tell you that his name is Timmy.

I like to call him Timmy, The Luckiest Bastard Caterpillar. Ever.

a Story...in (slightly more than) 6 pictures.

I have an ambition.

I want to tell really good great stories in 6 pictures.

No words.

Editing the pictures for this story was like pulling my hair out with tweezers. Each one that didn't make the cut was a tiny little tug on my heart strings.

And so, I'm being compassionate with myself today.  11 pictures is okay, right?

metaphors...

I've been learning to work with chalk pastels this summer, and am officially addicted.  I'm also addicted to faces, it turns out...at the moment it's old faces that have captured my attention.  I took a few pictures along the way with this granny. The process from start to finish speaks so many metaphors to my "real" life...amazing.

 

(Sweet jeebus...who do I think I am? Some sort of artist?! There's NO way that this thing will ever look ANYTHING like a face!)

(well, at least she doesn't look dead anymore. completely nauseous about pulling together the rest of her face. Oh look, she's a SHE....who knew?)

(whew, she's starting to look old...maybe I don't hate her afterall....not entirely sure what to do with her chin & mouth area. Put a flu mask over it maybe?)

 

(HOLY HELL!!!  What the (#*%&* have I done?!?! Will I ever learn to just QUIT WHILE I'M AHEAD???!  Dear god.)

 

(Great. Just effing great. Grandma with a swimcap on. )

At this point in the process I got up, forced myself to eat lunch, and go poke around in my garden for a bit. When I came back in, I wasn't so mad at her anymore, and was able to keep going. Lesson here.....blood sugar. And fresh air. And SPACE.  Amen.

(Okay. Maybe it looks like a knit beanie now. Maybe. Definitely glad I didn't rip her to pieces an hour ago.)

So there she is.  Probably not finished yet. No doubt I will mess around with her hat a bit more later. But I am SO glad I didn't listen to the little voices in my head when they told me that I can't draw.
